The view over the fields to the mountains in the back are beautiful. The location is great only a few minutes to the entrance of Custer State Park and a short-ish drive to Mt. Rushmore, etc...The owners were pleasant. The check in/out policy is a tad on the aggressive side with 10am check out and 3pm check in but it's understandable since it's a small family run operation and they seemed to do all the maintenance themselves. You may need some time to maneuver into your site depending on which one you get as some looked to be a bit of a challenge to get into but nothing too difficult. All in all it was well worth it and we are excited to stay again some day.

This was a wonderful campground. The bathrooms/shower house were super clean. Many nice touches throughout the resort. Many sites have beautiful views. Some sites are less desirable. Check a map and pictures before booking. We did have some issues with the electrical supply, but overall a wonderful stay. Highly recommend.

Called Shelah and Tom to check availability for our trip, 7/11-7/14/21. They were super friendly and helpful, and the deposit was very nominal, I think one day's fee. Paid the remainder upon arrival. We came to the Roost Resort by way of Siuox Falls. The location is absolutely perfect. We loved getting pop over into Custer City (1800's town with a great modern vibe) in just 5 minutes. The entrance of the highway was about 400 ft of asphalt and a little bumpy, but completely doable without issue. Check-in was super easy and they have firewood and ice on site for $5 and $2 respectively. We were at site 10 in the back corner with electric 30amp and water. We looped the small circle and backed in with ease. Needed two leveling blocks on the north side but that was easy too. I cannot overstate how amazing the view is there (see photos). Neighbor sites are between 10 and 20 feet away. Everyone there was as nice as could be. There are cabin and tent sites on the grounds as well, and all generations were present while we were there. They have done a great job mapping out the campground and made it easy to familiarize before you go, so be sure to click around the maps on the website! The bathhouse was unbelievably clean, rustic, and the men's side had 2 showers and one each toilet and urinal stalls. Also a full sink. They provide floor towels to help keep the ground dry, just toss in basket when you're done. Seriously, some of the nicest facilities we've seen.If I had it to do over again we would have stayed here longer and shortened or follow on stays.

Stayed on site 3, it had a wonderful view and shade. The campground is small but that’s fine for us. Everyone from the owners to guests were all so nice. The showers were very clean but a little small for me but probably fine for an average size guy. Overall we would definitely stay here again.

AT&T service was 2-3/4 bars. WiFi was generally strong, but reportedly weak in the remaining RV sites in the back loop. Most sites feature extraordinary views of the neighboring valley (where we saw many deer and antelope) and the rock outcroppings across it. Tom, the owner, was very attentive. The campground entrance has great curb appeal. The grounds are immaculate for a relatively rustic campground with pads that are either gravel, grass, or a combination of the two. The buildings are mostly log construction. The restrooms feature pine-knot paneling throughout and are immaculately maintained. The location is near shopping, restaurants, and services in the west part of Custer. We look forward to staying here again when we return for a month in September-October.

Expected to stay at Custer SP (they have 7 campgrounds). Couldn't get in, booked mid week in September. Came out of park toward town, found this gem. Love it, clean, neat, showers/restrooms. Mule deer in abundance. Parked a 40' coach in site 3 with great view of the pasture. Only 3 other campers here.

I needed a place to spend a few nights in Custer over labor day weekend and was worried I wouldn't be able to find anything with only a weeks notice, but these guys got me right in. I had site #3 which is probably the hardest site to access. You have to back down a hill and then around an S curve into the site, dodging a tree on one side and a steep dropoff on the other. The owner was super nice though and offered to come help me if I needed it. I ended up not having any trouble getting it in and found an area on the site that was perfectly level. The trouble to get in there did have a payoff though because I had an awesome view down into the valley and basically had an entire backyard to myself. The location here can't be beat. The park is right outside Custer and takes only a few minutes to get into town. It's also close to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Custer State Park. My site also had a small fire pit and a picnic table, though the table was kind of away from the site. As I mentioned before, this site does have kind of a steep dropoff on the side of your doors, so I could see it potentially being a bit dangerous for older or handicapped people as you could pretty easily slip and fall down the hill. I only went in the restrooms once but they looked immaculate. Never used the showers. My site had full hookups and everything worked well. Overall I had a great experience here and would highly recommend it.

One mile from Custer, 1.5 miles from Custer State Park, 10 minutes to Crazy Horse, 30 minutes to Mount Rushmore, 30 minutes to Wind Caves National Park, and 15 minutes to Sylvan Lake. It's a quaint park with only a handful of spots - 2 pull-through spots and 5-8 back-ins. The tree cover is super peaceful and you get gorgeous views of the Black Hills granite formations and a lovely meadow where white-tailed deer graze every night and morning. Deer even walk right into the camp! We loved that each site had a fire ring and a dedicated trash can. Only $5 for a huge stack of firewood and $1 for ice. The bathhouse was the best restroom and shower facility I've seen at an RV park. And the owners were so friendly! The only issue we had was the park had a ton of pine trees, making it scary to maneuver our 36' fifth wheel. Other than that, an amazing stay and we would definitely return!

The Roost Resort had one spot left, and we should have known when they had to verify if our rig could fit it was going to be a tight squeeze with some advanced maneuverability. This is a small, tranquil lot, which made it harder to get into slot 12, which was up a slope where you couldn't directly back up into it (since someone was in slot 11), you had to backwards turn into it. It was quite a challenge for us newbies, but it ended up working out. The box/water ended up on the wrong side of our trailer, but everything reached. The view was great! Despite the headache of getting into that spot, we really liked our stay. Because there are only 12 spots, it didn't feel crowded at all. The cell service was really good, and how close this is to Custer, Crazy Horse, Wind Cave and Mt. Rushmore is fantastic. We already want to come back and spend more time in the area, and we would definitely stay here again. Just not in slot 12.

The park is a very small private facility with only about a dozen RV sites and a handful of rental cabins, so it is very quiet and uncrowded. The RV area overlooks a broad flat field where wildlife frolic, with great views of classic Black Hills granite jutting up in the distance. The RV sites are reminiscent of a state park (gravel, not particularly level, with water and electric service only) and because of the configuration it could be hard to get in or out if all the sites are full. That being said, we only had a few neighbors and it was glorious. We loved the frequent wildlife visits, the utilities worked perfectly, and the bathrooms were immaculate. The location is ideal for visiting Custer State Park (the only better option to camp inside the park itself!), Mount Rushmore, etc., but is also close to the town of Custer for easy access to groceries, gas, and restaurants. The hosts (new owners Tom and Shelah) were incredibly welcoming as well. We loved everything about our (short) stay.

I don't understand why this site has the ratings it does. It hardly seemed worth the pricetag. The site was small, and unless you get the premier spots facing the adjacent field to watch the deer in the evening, the sites are underwhelming. The resort is a mix of little cabin rentals and water/electric RV sites. Unlike the plethora of other RV parks the immediate area, this park gem. It's very small so you don't feel like jam packed, the owner is blend of cowboy and hippie, bathrooms & showers are spotless, and when you fill your grey tank, just drain it into the field (as encouraged by the owner). Sites are not level and the park is definitely on the older side, but didn't let these facts keep you away. This place is fantastic. I'd imagine larger Class B or Class A rigs might have issues accessing, but we had no issues our 27' trailer.

Most of the private parks in this very touristy area are large, cramped and noisy. This place is the exact opposite. With only a handful of RV sites, most with only water and electric, this place is not a big attraction for those looking for a campground with all the amenities. There is no pool for the kids, or playground, or mini-golf. What there is are nice sites with gorgeous views of the surrounding meadow and hills, very friendly and accommodating owners, and a peaceful atmosphere all for a very reasonable price. As a bonus you also get a wildlife show every morning and evening when the Pronghorn Antelope graze in the nearby field. The Roost Resort is also centrally located near the town of Custer only a short drive from Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Monument, and tons of hiking in the Custer State Park. We loved this place and enjoyed 6 nights here while exploring the Black Hills.
