  • Quiet, comfortable and close to Black Hills attractions.

Our campsite backed up to a wooded area where we watched a family of deer every evening. Scenery was nice! It was a more adult oriented campground because it didn't have a playground, pool etc. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The campground also had their own rental cars which although well used, served their purpose in getting us all around the lovely Black Hills. Would definitely go here again if in the area! Cell service was challenging, but wifi was adequate especially if you were situated near one of their boosters. Best wifi signal came from the office.

We stayed here at the end of May during COVID. Thank you SD for keeping campgrounds open! No tent camping was allowed because the bathrooms and showers had to remain close. This is a quiet campground off of the main road and very close to Custer State Park which is where you will spend most of your time if you stay for more than a couple of days. There are other campgrounds in the area and if you enjoy the sound of trucks engine braking then stay at one of those. This park was so quiet and peaceful you could almost imagine the gulch filled with General Custer's tents. We had full hookups and the gravel site required minor leveling. We drive a small rig but this place is definitely big rig friendly. It is next to a public forest road and some campers simply drove their dirt bikes and side by sides from their site to the public lands next door. The park is also just a couple of miles from the town of Custer which will have everything you need. Some other reviews mention a cranky park owner. Frankly we were a little disappointed that we did not experience any of that. Friendly and helpful owners and staff were the norm for us.

No daily passes sold.We also did Big Thunder Gold Mine & 1880 Train. Highly recommend those too!

Sites have full hook ups (there are a few with electric only, and some tent sites, as well) with 50 amp. Sites are pretty level, too. The staff keeps the property in pristine condition! The bathrooms, laundry, and clubhouse were always clean. Fire wood is available there, as well. (Don't bring wood into the area, as the forest service doesn't allow you to burn it. Easier to pick it up there!) They also have onsite propane. They have a couple of small cabins for rent, and also a couple of cars for sight seeing. The best thing is the location. About a mile from the west entrance to Custer State Park, and easy access to all things Black Hills. We had a great time there! Cell service was adequate, but they do have wi-fi available in the park for free.

I think the rate is a bit high but it seems to be the case near many of the more popular NPs or tourist areas. We were quite close to Custer State Park and the Needles Highway. We enjoyed our time there and it's closeness to Custer for restaurants and other activities. This is a great park for it's closeness to the state park, the town of Custer and other activities. There is hiking available from the campground. The park is kept nicely and we enjoyed walking our dogs around the small pond. We saw deer from our site. It was quiet and peaceful.

The campground is quite large, offering full-hookup sites for the biggest rigs, cabins, tents, and a boondocking area. The campground is not fancy, i.e. there's no pool, the road is gravel, etc., but we thought that was fine since we loved our large grassy site. We didn't have any complaints about the dirt road to get into the park. The WiFi worked pretty well (not fast) during the day, but was often barely usable in the evening. Our site was near the top of the hill, far from the highway, and we had no AT&T service and very weak Verizon. Closer to the entrance/office, both AT&T and Verizon worked better. We hooked up our booster and were then able to use both at our site. We found enough places to walk our dogs in the campground, and some campers hiked up the big hill behind the campground. There are a couple lakes in the campground but they are overgrown and the water looks greenish. There was quite a bit of wind every day, so we rarely got to open our awning. We were able to get some mail and packages shipped to us at the campground too which was convenient. The location is great, being right in the middle of many local attractions in all directions. Being set back pretty far from the highway, the campground was very quiet which we appreciated. We saw several other campgrounds in the area that were right along the road and will get more noise. We'd stay here again.

Even though this campground was pretty full during my short stay, it didn't feel like people were right on top of me.I had site #30 and if your trailer fits it, I would recommend this spot. Trees lined the site. There is shower and laundry facilities. Some of the sites have trees for shade, others are a little open but pretty good spacing between the sites for a private park.Custer SP is close by as are other attractions. I didn't have time to hike or go to the other attractions but I know from some avid hikers that there are some great trails.
