Campground is NOT on lake but maybe 6 sites. Location is convenient, but this is where they lost us and will NOT get our return. We had to leave unexpectedly 1 night early due to my brother in law had been in hospital for a month with covid and is fighting hard for his life and we just got word we could visit him. So we got text while out in lake kayaking so we paddled back quickly. Went in to speak with manager at 2pm. He didn’t want to hear anything- just a flat NO. We are living in crazy inhumane times - how about a little compassion? So do yourself a favor and book Battle Run - much nicer campground- but kicker there is NO pets. They hide the pets part at bottom of website.

After reading the other (not great) reviews we were still going to give it a try due to the proximity of the marina. Requested to stay 6/29, 6/30, and 7/1 (leaving 7/2). Was told that the "holiday rates" start on 7/1 and there is a 3 night minimum stay. I said "great! We're staying 3 nights." Nope. 3 nights - STARTING ON 7/1. We would have had to add two more nights to our stay to be able to book. I even was willing to pay the holiday rate for the three nights that we wanted to stay (which were a Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday BTW). I understand having holiday rates, and understand minimums. Just be aware they will not be flexible (was I really asking them to be flexible? Still up in the air...). We'll be staying elsewhere on the Lake.

We had our boat with us, and were told that there are tie ups. There are not, there are trees to tie to and a somewhat rocky shore to beach on, so boaters beware. However, this lake is amazing to explore! Some of the most amazing rock structures and fun nooks and crannies. The campground is large, so it helps to have a vehicle. Laundry and bathroom facilities are clean and nice. I would highly recommend. It's a perfect place to boat, kayak and explore.

You must now provide vaccinations for pets.- Do you have any tips to make it a better experience?Don't stay near the place where campers unload their sewage, the smell is very unpleasant.- What was your favorite thing about this location? The beauty and the sunsets of Summersville Lake- Any negatives to report?Oh yes! Terrible customer service from the owner, Susan. Our story...Memorial Day Wknd 2016Our first visit to Mtn Lake Campground with our church life group which I organized. We all had a wonderful time, 12 of us. This year we were in a tent..June 2017Our 2nd trip to Mtn Lake Campground and we invited our friends from northern Virginia to come along and they did, 8 of us this trip, had an amazing time. We purchased a pop up camper and our camping experience was superb.July 2018Our 3rd trip to Mtn Lake Campground, this year we only brought a friend of our son, 4 of us. The teen guest loved it there and wanted his family (dad is a pastor), who has 8 kids to come the next summer. This trip we thought we would bring our dogs after seeing other families with their dogs. I read on the website that certain breads were not welcome. When making my reservations, I explained that our doberman is an Emotional Wellness Therapy dog and that I had a letter from my doctor. The reservationist had to check with management and I received a call back that it would be fine to bring her, just be sure to have a copy of the letter. We came in July with our Jack Russell and Doberman and we had another amazing trip. Our absolute favorite place to camp now.June 2019Now empty nesters, we invited friends to come along with us. Made our reservations back in January. We arrive on Wednesday, June 26 to see a sign at the store with a checklist of items needed to check in. On that list was pet vaccinations. My husband asked if I had them and I said , no - didn’t have to last year but could call vet and have her fax. We checked in and they said that was a new rule and we didn’t need it this year. My husband completed some paperwork and we were off to set up our camp site. After camp was set-up, we tucked in our Doberman in the nice AC pop-up so we could run out and get some groceries for the next 5 days. While out, I receive a call on my cell from Summersville so I thought I should take it. It was the campground office. “Mam, we just noticed that you listed a doberman on your camp paperwork and we don’t allow dobermans due to our insurance.” I explained that I was aware of that and that we brought her last year, was told all we needed was a letter from my doctor and I can bring you a copy of that. Girl said she would have to check with her manager and put me on hold. I held for a few minutes and she returned to tell me someone would call me back tomorrow. Next morning, I get a call from Susan, the owner of the campground who informed me our dog could not stay and that she had some local boarder recommendations. I explained to her that we were allowed to last year and didn’t understand what was different, had I known, I would have found a sitter for her. Explained she has never been boarded and that was not an option for us. Our 14.5 year old Jack Russell just past away a week ago and we are all still mourning, I’m not leaving her alone. She was rather nasty, NEVER apologizing and said she wasn’t going to argue with me. I wasn’t trying to argue but was just asking to be treated fairly as a customer. I asked her to try and consider our situation, we were not communicated that rules changed. She said she didn’t have to, but would offer us a refund. Really???? Pack up and go home after we just unpacked - also not an option because with this late of notice there would be no availability at another campground. By now, I am crying (this is our vacation) and explaining this was the last of my PTO days due to a merger and would not have any for a while. Explained we were repeat customers and that she should at least be flexible, she would not budge, didn’t care. She then said, the dog needs to be gone ASAP. I gave up and hoped maybe my husband could save the day when he returned but no such luck. Due to her negligence and her staff’s, we had to drive back home (3 hours) to take our precious Shadow to friends, then turn around and drive back 3 hours, a PTO day completely blown sitting in a car, extra gas money, extra toll fees, and expense of a pet sitter. We were not happy with the situation. My husband was so angry he would not even buy an ice cream at the store as to spend money at her business. After I calmed down, I thought the situation and figured the fair thing for her to do would be at least refund us that day we lost driving. Upon check out, my husband asked for the manager or the owner, conveniently, they were not available. The next day I called and asked a staff person if they would have the manager or owner call me today, if at all possible. You guessed it, did not get a return call yet. I was going to give them an opportunity to do the right thing so I would not have to post this negative review, however, a repeat customer who refers others was not worth a call. You should have done the right thing, a refund of a day wasn’t going to break the bank, actually it is going to cost you money now. My visitors this year was a pastor and professor of Liberty University, they won’t be coming back or recommending your campground. You can bet we won’t be back based on your other reviews and how we were treated. We love Jesus and we try to do the right thing, wish other people would. With that kind of customer service in a business you are destined for failure. What a shame! You have a beautiful location with great amenities but lack of customer service is more important. I’m gonna spread the word on all the social media I can.

Ohh almost forgot the only real negative I can give is that the fire pits need upgraded...no fire ring or cooking grate just rocks in a circle!
