On AT&T, with an antenna plugged into the hotspot, it was minimally better, but still only 1 bar and not strong enough for a webinar or video call. Would need to drive into town for that (~10 minutes).Stars were beautiful at night!! Very little light polution here.

As I arrived I found 2 other rigs that I was put next to in the empty park however for $25 for a space with electric, water and decent restrooms/showers what can one really expect? Much better then one I found in the city center, Country… something. The town itself is pretty neglected and past it’s hay day.

So I guess those RVers have no idea how to pull into a pull through site without hitting something. Such BS. I was told that I could drive over to Sonora to find a better site if I wanted to. It’s at least a 20 minute ride each way so we stayed. If I wasn’t so tired of driving, I probably would have left. Do not camp here. They will not make any exceptions even when they are empty!!!

We checked in and were assigned site 22. We followed the map to the general area and found none of the sites had visible numbers. There was a guy sitting in a lawn chair, the only other occupied site, we visited and between us figured that since he and I were the only ones here it pretty much didn’t matter which site I hooked up to. We were wrong. I settled into what turned out to be 24. Jacks down, slides out, about to open an adult grain beverage and all of a sudden a smallish elderly lady is screaming at me that I’m in the wrong site. Keep in mind here that we are two RVs in ten sites at 5 in the afternoon at a park that does not accept reservations. I mention that to illustrate that there is no way to know how many sites will be occupied for the night. After some discussion (you ever argue with an idiot?) it was agreed that I would pull in slides, pull up jacks and move to 21, so as not to crowd our new friends in 23 (22remains unoccupied). No sooner did we get set up than a big fifth wheel pulls into the site next to us (20) leaving no less than five unoccupied sites down the way. These sites are way too close together for my taste and even without the bad experience with management they would not have gotten great reviews. The site utilities appear to be functional (water and 50 amp electric only), access roads are decent and we’re told that the caverns are nice. Given different circumstances we might have booked the cavern tour @$20/person but we choose not to enrich ownership further than we already have. I have posted pictures of site 21/20, the larger view of the area and the rudimentary map that we were supposed to use to figure out where our site was located. Did I mention that there were no numbers on any of the sites?Nothing can be done at this point about the closeness of the sites but numbering the sites and correcting management’s attitude with respect to customer service and empathy in general would go a long way toward making this a more pleasurable experience.

Due to a miscommunication error, neither my husband nor I read the reviews before calling the Caverns on the day of arrival to inquire about availability. The lady who answered the phone stated "we have plenty of room". So we took the 10ish mile trek from the highway to the RV park. We were happy to see there were a good number of trees as shade was something we were after. I asked the young man who checked us in for a spot in the shade. He said they didn't have any and after consulting with his mom, offered either a couple of spots on the upper level or spot 24, right next to the ONLY other camper in the park. I asked about the spots we had seen under the trees. He asked Mom about the tent spots. Clearly no hook-ups there I suspected. So it was off to one of the upper spots. On the way there, we noticed a spot on the lower, pull through level that was in the shade. While my husband pulled into that spot, I headed back to the office to ask if we could have that one. The manager met me outside the door and immediately informed me they don't like people to camp down there. I told her we were looking for a spot with shade and she snarkily said "oh I know exactly what you want, you came in looking for it". Like asking for shade was an unreasonable request. When I asked why we couldn't camp in the shade of the tree she said that if any big rigs came in, they can't get around. Huh? It was 4:00 p.m. and were one of two campers in the park. What were the odds of a big rig coming in that time of day? There did seem to be sufficient room for a vehicle/camper to pull around on either side. She did offer us the spot on the other side of an abandoned camper as it provided a bit of shade. So that's where we headed. Later I took the dogs for a walk and found that the "tent spots" did indeed have hook-ups which could have easily accommodated our 20 foot trailer and Ford Explorer. The icing on the cake was learning the next morning that we were camped next to a skunk hole. Found that out after our dogs were sprayed by a juvenile skunk. Would we stay here again? NO WAY! They clearly do not want visitors, so stay away. You will have a better experience staying at a rest stop or WalMart parking lot.

We asked for a refund and left. Too bad too because I am sure we would have spent money in the store and probably done the cavern tour.

Google showed us the Caverns of Sonora, which I had never heard about before. Visiting the caverns seemed epic, then I saw on their website they also have RV parking/camping, which made it even better. The caverns are privately owned, but well worth a visit. Not all parts of the cavern are open during covid season, but we still got a fantastic 1 hour tour of the parts that were open. The RV campground is a two minute walk next door and has about 10 pull through sites equipped with water and 30/50 amp electric. Sites are given out on a first come first serve basis, so you cannot make a reservation, but the lady working the counter said they never get full. When we were there on a Sunday night, we were the fourth RV. I also noticed an area for tent camping as well which had water and electric. There is no sewer for campers due to the caverns, but if you go to the public rest area 8 miles away (as measured from the parking lot) on I-10 headed east, there is a free RV dump station there. Someone did a review on google on it and took pictures if you want to see what the rest station dump station looks like. We had no connectivity to AT&T, but had 1-2 bars on Verizon. There are no OTA tv channels. There are peacocks that like to walk the grounds and lots of different types of birds. Grounds are fairly level with an asphalt/gravel base. There is one shower available to campers in both the women's and men's restrooms. The restrooms are open 24 hours and were clean. There is no official check in or check out time. The visitor's shop is fun to look around and even has a few items (like blue bell ice cream!) to stock up the fridge. The people who work here are super friendly and we will definitely be back if we're headed out to West Texas again.

The bathrooms are a mystery — some areas are super clean; there was a fresh curtain and plenty of hot water, but the shower itself was totally neglected. The tour is long. The caves have 98% humidity and there’s a lot of CO2 down there. The formations are interesting and sometimes very beautiful, and the guide was excellent, but I would have preferred a shorter tour with a faster pace and less explanation. I had more fun admiring the peacocks and assorted wildlife up top.

The tour is about an hour and 45 minutes with 360 steps in addition to the ramps. Will give you a nice little workout but not really strenuous. Beautiful sights through out and an interesting history, well worth the $20 per. The sites are ok. Mine was not level but I was able to level my rig with leveling blocks. Water and electric (30 and 50) but no sewer or dump tanks. There is a dump station at an Interstate rest stop about a mile south of the park. Site map shows 15 pull thru sites but only about 9 or 10 are usable. No wifi available, I had 2 bars on my verizon jetpack and was able to stream video but I do us an outside antenna with a booster. Not a lot of room between but enough for slide outs. The park also has about 15 back in sites but they are not deep, long rigs end up in the roadway but there is enough room on the shoulder opposite to get around. The main attraction her is the caverns, not the RV park. Being able to RV just makes it easier to visit. Rest rooms are ok, showers are old, not much light when in there. Very nice people and gift shop and a big old dog who loves to be cuddled. They also have some game there. We saw a lot of deer and there are about 6 - 8 peacocks that reside there. I enjoyed watching a male putting on his best moves trying to impress one of the females, didn't seem to interest her though.

Caverns of Sonora met our needs: Between Austin and Ft Davis, with something to do--it was a good stop for the night. It is about 8 miles outside Sonora. It is a privately run RV, Campgrounds and Caverns, with a cool little gift shop. We got in after dark around 9pm, and there were still people pulling in for the night, so they showed us where to go, and we just paid in the gift shop the next morning. The RV area is a parking lot, and the campsite area is basically a very small loop where you can throw down a tent wherever you want on the grass or just park (we have a truck tent, so that's what we did). Bathrooms are available with showers. We parked next to some picnic tables and a basketball court, and in the morning, my kids loved to shoot hoops while the adults packed up. You can see deer in the morning from your site! The place we parked was level enough for us.Caverns were a fun diversion on a long drive to Big Bend, so that was nice. Strangely, the caves are not cool (temperature-wise), but it was something interesting to do before hitting the road again!

The sites themselves are extremely cramped) - 2Campground location (Perfect for the caverns, NOTHING else) - 3Nearby amenities (Absolutely nothing nearby) - 1Site Privacy (0 privacy, this is a parking lot) - 2Campground amenities (Bathrooms were clean, good gift shop, no onsite dump) - 2Dog friendly (Not a lot of walking space, filled with deer poop) - 3Activities (Cavern was spectacular) - 5Cost ($25/night for 50amp W/E) - 5Staff friendliness (staff is wacky but fun and nice) - 5Connectivity (Barely usable cell w/out a booster. Usable after booster for both ATT and Verizon. There are a lot of dead areas as you walk around) - 2Total rating = 3.0

It doesn't detract at all from the experience. The store is incredible inside and out. It brought back memories of road trips as a child many decades ago. We spent some very relaxing time on the porch sitting in an old fashioned glider. The wildlife was abundant. A screech owl perched at eye level right in the campground. Deer were everywhere. They don't have a dump station on site. The nearest one is 6 miles away on I-10. There are showers so not having a dump on site wasn't a huge deal. The ranch dogs roam loose and are very friendly. One is huge and very playful. There is WiFi, but we didn't have much luck with it. If we travel through that area again, we will plan on staying at least two full days.

  • it isn't the campground, it's the caverns!

But the caverns were simply astounding! My tour guide took me on a tour by myself at the end of the day, and we spent almost two hours down in the caverns. I was totally blown away by the beauty and strangeness of the caverns, and my guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the geology, chemistry, and history of the caverns- she made the place come alive for me in a way that was just unbelievable. Arlene was my guide and I can't recommend her highly enough! She's genuine and funny and she loves those caverns so much that she makes you fall in love with them too. I got yelled at a little bit for breaking the 10mph speed limit and I was trying to be good- so go slower than you think you should and you should escape condemnation. They have awesome homemade fudge in the gift shop, too.The only downside is that it's about ten miles from town, so plan accordingly. But seriously, if you are anywhere near this part of the world, you owe it to yourself to get out here- it would be a huge loss to miss this crazy little bit of the weirdness of the world!

  • A basic campground

The campground is a very basic gravel lot with not a lot of separation between sites, but you're not there for the sites...you're there for the caverns! Which are incredible and well worth the $20/person tour price. Even if you don't plan to see the caverns (but you totally should), this is a great spot to spend the night on what is otherwise a really desolate section of I-10.
