The store is well stocked. We enjoyed the birding and the dark skies. We fell in love with the Portal and Cave Creek area. We saw so many birds that we lost count. The only downside is that we are on Verizon and the signal was very poor and the wifi comes and goes. We were able to do emails, but no videos/streaming.

  • Lots of upgrades, Verizon now VERY weak.

It's time for an amenities update on this website (lots of good changes). FYI....Price we paid is for dry camping (the place was full). As of today (April of 2022), Verizon no longer works in the area. I was able to get a couple of texts out by putting my phone in a high window of the RV facing Animas, but that was it. Something is up with the tower. So be aware. ATT however is fantastic. The new cell tower just 5 miles south has been a game changer.Rusty's now has a heated above ground pool! This was a surprise when we arrived this year. A nice new deck surrounds the pool and the hot tub. Woohoo! In 2021 they added two new bathrooms/showers. They are very good. I usually just use the shower in our rig. But these are so nice, I often have to decide where to shower. Then outside patio at the clubhouse is now enclosed. That makes the area much more usable. There are three large screen TVs in the clubhouse. If you have a show you just can't miss, no worries.Rusty's continues to make improvement. We will be back again and again.

We are SO glad we did! We loved this place. Staff is really friendly and Rusty runs a tight ship! Everything was very well maintained. Many of the residents are here for the dark skies and amazing birding in nearby Cave Creek Canyon. So no outside lights allowed at night. Made it lovely to see all the stars! Rusty has a collection of exotic caged birds well housed in a lovely little garden to attract birds migrating through the area. And we were given a map of the eastern Chiricahua area when we arrived, showing all the great birding sites and hiking trails. Rusty’s puts on a “Tacos Tuesday” and “Friday Potluck” (it was a well attended fish fry when we were there) to help build the community and meet your neighbors. We are looking forward to coming back and staying here again - later in the spring when the birds are migrating through here. We will stay at Rusty’s rather than fight for a spot at Sunny Flats or the other NF campgrounds. They were mostly taken even in mid January! So Spring would be difficult for FCFS! Better to come with a reservation and get full hook ups for only $9 more a night at Rusty’s, than the NF campsites! We had acceptable cell service with our T-mobile hotspot and WeBoost. Our phones - with AT&T and Verizon were ok, too, but much of the time only 1-2 bars of LTE. Just enough to do emails and small downloads.

Since my last stay less than a year ago, Rusty's has made some great improvements, adding 2 new private full bathrooms and enclosing a former outdoor space. One of Rusty's biggest attributes, though, is its location. Far from any town of any size and surrounded by mountains and natural beauty, Rusty's offers a quiet escape from the stresses of everyday life. Rusty herself, and the rest of the folks who run the park, are genuinely friendly and very helpful. There are unique and exotic birds from around the world that Rusty houses in large cages along a shaded pathway (complete with full descriptions), as well as a beautiful pond housing 3 large black swans and, new from a year ago, 2 seemingly friendly goats. The surrounding area is ripe for exploring. The stunning Cave Creek Canyon is nearby in Portal, Arizona. The RV sites are spacious, with full hookups, picnic tables, and some include firepits. Every one of them offers 360 degree scenic views. Rusty's gets rave reviews across every platform I've seen, and I fully concur with the park's high ratings.

I was happy to see this place was in excellent condition and kept up very well. The spots are all large. Very large. My 20 footer took up a very small portion of my space. It seems everyone has quite a bit of privacy. The units are spaced out nicely. I walk around the park regularly and they have a nice pond and a perimeter walking trail that is really enjoyable. It does add to the experience. They also have a nice shaded walking area with water features and some birds in large cages for you to check out. It's done really well. For cell service I am using Verizon right now. I use a jetpack with a stick-on window antenna. It is working okay for me. Enough to stream tv regularly and surf the net too. I am a programmer so internet is required for my work. I have enough internet with this jetpack to get by for just myself. Sometimes it does get slowed down but not often. I have heard that the AT&T service is much better here so I am thinking about purchasing service with them to have faster speeds. Although Verizon works I would love more speed/bandwidth. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating. They can suggest all sorts of things to do nearby (in nature). There's not much nearby except for nature. A couple small cafe's and grocery store (kinda). Walmart is an hour away. I don't find that too bad. Gas is about 20 min away but pumps are open 24 hours. All in all I have enjoyed my stay.

Comfortable clubhouse with great outside seating. Pristine laundry facility. 1.2 mile path around the property. Extremely clean and well-sanitized during this challenging coronavirus crisis. Ten miles from one of the best birding areas in the world! In a dark sky area that attracts many stargazers. At the edge of the Chiricahua Mountains that have hundreds of miles counof spectacular trails. It is somewhat off the beaten path but absolutely worth going there. You will not be disappointed. There are some spices in the club room if you are in a pinch- you are 50 miles from MX so the area is patrolled. This may bring some people comfort, or feel like a military state to others. I kinda go both ways. - Goatheads - they are pervasive in the entire southwest. I got one in my flip flop one the way to the hot tub and the hurt like hell. Stick to the roads and not the softer ground. Not a good place for paws.

The campground itself is pretty nice, but the interior roads are dirt and were pretty rutted/bumpy (e.g. deep, hardened tire ruts from what was probably a rainy/muddy season). Our site was at the end of a row so we had tons of space on our camping side, but rigs are parked next to each other facing opposite directions with shared utilities in between, so we had a rig very close on the driver's side. There's no AT&T service at all, and we were only able to get 3G on our Verizon. Fortunately, the free campground WiFi worked pretty well for the basics (e-mail, social media, maps, etc.). The price was a little high for basic amenities ($32 with tax), and while they offer a 50% discount for Escapees members, it's only usable for 3+ night stays. Since we stayed for two nights, we actually paid more ($64) than we would have if we'd stayed for three ($48) which is a strange way to do business. It was very quiet during our stay. Also, it was fairly windy each afternoon. We'd stay here again if we ever return to the area, as long as we don't need high speed internet/cell service.

To the point that stocking up on groceries and gas is necessary. The location is beautiful though and the nearby Coronado National Forest has some great hiking and photo taking opportunities. The RV park itself is clean, has solid 50amp full hookups and level sites. The staff is very nice and helpful and will make you feel welcome. Rusty has a lot of knowledge about nearby activities. They also have weekly potluck dinners and other social events if that’s your thing. If it’s not, then you can just chill out in the huge sites and enjoy the views. The laundry is small and there’s only 1 bathroom. There is also no cable and we were unable to pull in any OTA channels. For cell service there’s no ATT even with a booster. I was able to pull in decent Verizon (4.5d/l) and T mobile (3 d/l) with the booster. However, without the booster it wasn’t reliable. The park’s WiFi was really good for a private park (10d/l) but they ask that you don’t steam with it so we respected that and streamed with our Verizon and T mobile hotspots. There’s a great 1mile trail around the park and a fenced in dog park so this is a dog friendly location. Also the national park is dog friendly.

After day 1, we knew all the staff by their first names. Rusty was full of information when we arrived. Bob was helpful in showing us to our site. Tim was great too. We felt like family. This campground is on a flat piece of land in a valley between two mountain ranges. They cater to the birders, astronomers, and hunters. We are none of these, but still loved it. The pull through sites are extremely long and easy to get into. 50 Amp electric was good. WiFi was excellent. NOTE: Verizon works here, but only 3G. A booster won't help, Verizon only installed a 3G tower. Straight Talk (is that AT&T?) and Tracfone (whatever carrier that is) won't work. OTA television mostly worked. I was able to pick up stations out of Tucson. NBC would come and go. PBS and Fox were always present. The owners are actively making improvements to an already pretty darn nice park. It is a dark sky park, so campers are requested to leave outside lights off to let all enjoy the stars. They are in the process of putting in a new pond. The VERY LARGE hot tub was 90 degrees when we arrived, since it was the end of summer and cooler is better then. Before we left, they had cranked the temp up to 102 since the nights were cooling down. We spent an enjoyable evening in the hot tub stargazing. I have never seen the Milky Way that easily or prominent before. I highly recommend doing this. There is a potluck every Friday night. The Park provided the main course. Everyone brings a dish to pass and their own beverages. It's held in the clubhouse. This is probably why it felt like family, we met a lot of people right from the get-go.The Park was pretty empty in August. That gave me full access to the club house. I am a quilter and wanted some space to get some projects done. They had no problem with me pushing tables together, etc. I made sure to restore everything to how I found it. The laundry room (2 washers and 2 dryers) was right next door, so I did laundry at the same time. There is a large TV with Dish Satellite in the clubhouse available for campers use 24x7.Take the time to walk through their garden area, enjoy the Koi pond, the birds and the bull frogs. A drive up into the mountains is a must. Rusty will give you a map with all the good birding locations.Yes, this campground is in the middle of nowhere. And that is how we like it. It was quiet and the views were majestic. We will go back.
