I did not actually stay at this campground but it is somewhat local so I wanted to check it out.We drove by on a Tuesday evening and the campground was empty (it’s a new cg and most people don’t know about it yet). The sites are all back-in and most are fairly long (sites 13, 14 and 15 are much shorter and would be best for tent camping or very short popups or tt) with a decent size patio area. Pad is gravel although many are a grass/gravel mix currently. There are 3 or 4 fire pits for the 15 sites to share. There were only a couple picnic tables present in the entire cg, but there are two large picnic shelters with tables, one at each end of the cg. All sites are water/electric only. 50/30/20 amp at all sites. There is a dump station – be aware there is an additional $15 fee to dump. The cg is situated along a road that circles Fish Pond Lake. The cg sits up above the lake and there is no direct water access from the cg, but it is available a short walk/drive away. Sites are mostly sunny although some may get some shade at certain times of the day. Sites appeared fairly level, but I would think some leveling would be required. There are 3 wooden decks/overlooks at the back of the sites that overlook the lake although the view is obstructed by trees you can still see some of the lake. There is a single bathroom (sink/commode only) in the cg area. There are no showers available. Fish Pond Lake is a beautiful small lake (45 acres) that does not allow gas powered motors. There is a small dock at the dam and numerous other locations to launch a canoe/kayak/small boat. Fishing is allowed with a valid KY state fishing license. Swimming is not permitted. The road around the lake is paved and is great for walking or biking and is mostly shaded. There is access to an ATV trail at the head of the lake. I’m not sure what/if any restrictions there are for ATVs in the cg area. There is a large area near the trailhead where ATV trailers could be parked. After you turn off the main highway the road becomes quite narrow, although there are numerous places to pull over. To enter the park you must go up quite a good hill with a sharp left turn at the top with a limited view. As you get around the curve you can go right or left. Go right as this is the most direct route to the cg. Drive all the way to the end of the sites and make the loop at the end to get you turned toward the way you came. This will get you lined up better to back into your site. While staying at the park be sure to check out some of the nearby attractions. Nearby Jenkins, KY is a historic coal camp town. Whitesburg, KY’s historic downtown includes Appalshop (cultural center), KY Mist Moonshine Distillery, Tanglewood Walking Trail, Veteran’s Museum and several local restaurants and shops. One of the best places to hike in the area is also nearby – Bad Branch Falls is an amazing 60 ft. waterfall that is a must see all year long. It’s a 2 mile roundtrip hike, but for those looking for something longer you can continue on up the trail to High Rock via the High Rock Loop Trail for amazing panoramic views from the top of the mountain. This trail intersects with the Pine Mountain Trail which is part of the much larger Great Eastern Trail. On your drive to Bad Branch Falls you will cross Pine Mountain which has some very nice overlooks. At the top of the mountain is a large overlook that is the entrance to Little Shepherd Trail, a 20 mile scenic drive along the ridgetop that is not to be missed. This drive is beautiful any time of year, but during the fall the changing leaves make it one of the best scenic drives anywhere. Just across the raod from the overlook is access to the Highland section of the Pine Mountain Trail, an amazing hiking trail for short day hikes or long overnight hikes alike.Check out my walk around the campground https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9_85flBZB4
