The lake is fairly useless - no beach and mostly shallow mangroves along the edges. IMO too small to be worth paddling around in either, and the no-see-ums are pretty bad in the afternoon/early evening. The sites are a reasonable size especially for the Keys, but if you don't have a smallish rig any of the "pull thru" sites are not going to actually be pull thru. There are trees at the end of most sites making it impossible to maneuver. I ended up backing out of my site and about 150' down the main drive in order to leave. Also they have just put in a new sewer system but the location is not ideal if you have a tank near the rear of your camper. Didn't go to the pool and didn't really see anyone there or at the "clubhouse" the whole time I was there. restroom/showers need some updating as well. There's not too much close by, other than a decent restaurant across US-1 (Mangrove Mama's). Key West is about 30 minute drive. ATT very fast on the Peplink - about 40 mbps down and 20 up. Unless they do a great job renovating, I'd prefer to pay a bit more to stay somewhere nicer.

  • We have always loved Lazy Lakes. It may be the last real old keys campground left.

There are TV,s and a pool table. The place is reasonably well maintained with a wide variety of site sizes. The lakes is a quarry that provided fill for the sites. It is square with a pier out the middle. It is rumored to contain many cars and rv's from past hurricanes. Many different kinds of trees live here. Here is the thing....You have to enjoy "old Keys" life. The road goes under water in a King Tide. The elevation is about 6" at our site which can be interesting when storm surge is forecast.

Our first site had broken glass, nails and screws scattered on it. Couldn’t find the cable TV cable after leaving a $100 deposit for the cable box. Turned out the cable was destroyed in that area but they gave me the box anyway. Moved to another site and figured we’d survive with WiFi. Signal was worthless. I realize camping means not always having WiFi and cable but for $100 a night I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect it, particularly when the campground advertises the service. Moved to a third site and managed to get a workable WiFi signal. We gave up on the cable TV. When I complained about the lack of services for the price I was told it’s a resort area and the high season. Basically it sucks to be me. It also looked like a lot of people living there full time as there were contractor vans and trucks parked overbite at numerous sites. The KOA next door got wiped out by the hurricane. They are currently doing a complete overhaul and rebuild of it with an opening date of fall 2019. Do yourself a favor, wait for KOA to reopen or go to one of the other campgrounds in the Keys. I’ll never go back there.

  • Nice quiet, peacfull camping.

They have always been able to accommodate me and always been a pleasure to deal with. The location is 18 miles to Key West proper for convenience if you want to spend time there and there are a number of great restaurants near by if you go explore and find them.Things to be mindful of would be the weather during the summer months, as there can be some flooding and tide related issues getting in and out.The facilities are clean. There is a great pool and clubhouse open to all. There is a laundry facility attached to the back side of the restrooms. These could be updated a little but are adequate and kept clean. There is nowhere else I would stay when coming to the Sugarloaf area.

Though the bath house was older, it was clean and well maintained. The laundry facilities were clean and all but one machine were in good working order. The machines were fairly new. We had a lakefront lot and enjoyed the breezes coming off the lake. The lake had a bit of smell, a vegetation smell, but it was not overpowering. There were campground activities but we did not have a chance to take part in them. For a deposit, we were provided with a box and connection to the camp's satellite television service.

The resort has everything you could need, full hook ups, a lake, a pool, a clubhouse and onsite laundry. The sites were plenty wide and easy to back into. The people that ran the resort were very friendly and helpful. The down side to this campground is that there is no direct ocean access from the property. It is also about 35 minutes from Key West. Also the sites are right next to each other so there isn't much privacy.Overall we loved our stay here and chose this park because it was the closest to Key West that would allow us to have a German Shepard. It was also one of the cheaper ones.
